Bob Wian created the Big Boy hamburger in 1937. The double deck hamburger was created for a patron & band member requesting something different. The burger and character came from a 6 year old boy, Richard Woodruff, who did odd jobs for grub. Wian called the lad Big Boy one day, hence the name. Warner Bros. artist Ben Washam sketched the original character on a napkin. Wian's restaurant, Bob's Pantry became Bob's, Home of the Big Boy and then simply Bob's Big Boy.
The original Big Boy used mayo and red relish on top. The Frisch's Big Boy, which came out in 1946, it is served with tarter sauce. Elsewhere, a version of thousand island dressing is used. Elsewhere probably dates to 1952.
Originally the Big Boy was 1/4 lb of beef. When McDonalds cloned the Big Boy, their Big Mac used 1/5 lb of beef and Big Boy allowed its operators to drop to 1/5 lb also.
So the Big Boy came out in 1937.
Bob Wian, creator of the "Big Boy" restaurant franchise, created the "Big Boy" double-decker hamburger in 1937. He invented the burger as a special request for a customer.

The Big Boy hamburger was the creation of Bob Wian in 1938 in Glendale California. It was named after a chubby young customer who swept up in exchange for burgers. Wian's operation grew into a chain of drive-ins so named "Bob's Big Boy." In 1947 began franchising the Big Boy hamburger and concept to others. In 1951 Wian sold his second franchise to Chuck Shoenbaum in Charleston WV, the founder of Shoney's Big Boy. Shoenbaum in turn sub-franchised to the Boury brothers who in 1956 launched Elby's Big Boy in Wheeling WV. The Big Boy was tweaked over time. Also Frisch's version of the Big Boy uses tarter sauce in place of the mayonnaise/relish/thousand island dressing sauce used by Wian and Elby's. Further, when Elby's dropped Big Boy from their Ohio operations, they kept an "Elby's double deck hamburger" that simply used a different formula for the sauce. So there are several answers as to when, but the best is 1938, though "Elby's" was still almost 20 years in the future.Ironically Wian initially franchised to bolster trademark protection but the success of the Big Boy led to the ousting of Wian, trademark battles among the franchisees and eventually defections from Big Boy to allow continued growth. Many of the franchisees exist no longer, including Elby's. Wian's concept of quality and generosity, the excitement, has been lost. So has the waiting to be seated.Greed.
