Hi i live in Morecambe Lancashire and remember the last fire very well. The fire was in February 1987 and later found to be an act of arson. The fire broke out in the front amusement arcade section and caused major damage to around two thirds of the structure.
Initially plans were made to refurbish and rebuild the structure, several prospective purchasers submitted plans to the council offering various reincarnations for the structure. All aimed at re vitalizing a then crumbling tourist industry in the town. Then in 1989 arsonists once again set fire to the remaining structure which had been left decaying for the last 2 years, this time completely destroying the remaining structure and severely damaging the iron structure beyond repair.
Alas in 1992 after much legal wrangling over who ( Macanultys ) pier owners or ( lancaster city council ) should pay for the demolition of the structure. The pier was torn down.
This was seen locally as a huge blow and the first very large nail in the coffin for the towns rapidly declining tourist industry.

The Wigan Pier is 'famous' because of it's inclusion in George Orwell's 1937 book The Road to Wigan Pier but according tot he reference below was first announced in the early twentieth century by George Formby Senior. The warehouses were a tourist place but the pier itself is now closed. The "pier" wasn't a true pier in any sense of the word; not when compared to other "famous" piers. The Southend-on-Sea pier was over 7,000 feet. The Southport pier in Lancashire won the National Piers Society's prestigious "Pier of the Year" award in 2003. The 'famous' Wigan Pier was simply a wharf where barges could pull up to load coal. George Orwell said he visited the pier in 1936 and couldn't find it but that from photos said it must have existed and was all of 20 feet long.
