The gold rush actually spanned several decades, but was spread out over different states. It began with the "official" discovery of gold in New South Wales and Victoria in 1851, and continued through to the Western Australian gold discoveries in the early 1890s.
There was a brief gold rush again with the discovery of gold in the Northern Territory in the 1930s.
The Ballarat goldfields were some of the richest in Australia, and the goldrush in that region really lasted right into the early years of the 20th century. The town of Berringa, which is just south of Ballarat, had a late rush in the first decade of the twentieth century.
Quite simply, alluvial gold and gold which could be accessed easily by basic shafts, ran out. Larger companies moved in, with heavy machinery that could dig deeper and access rich veins of gold.
