There were 2 models of Shadow 1100 in 1996, the standard uses a smaller gas tank than the Aero. on the standard model, the gas tanks from 1987 to 1996 are the same. if you have a standard, you can actually use the larger tank from the spriti models starting in 1997, but you will need to use the rubber mount for the newer year tank as well as the petcock from the newer model year and modify the center chrome sheild under the seat by cutting off the left most part that curves upwards and reglusing the rubber on top of that to protect the gas line with the new location of the petcock, the larger tank fits well and looks good on the bike as well.
The aero model started in 1995 and I believe all the larger tanks after that year are the same and will work as well.
