Engine, not motor. It's a GM small block - probably the 5.7 liter/350 CID - but all GM small blocks with a 4.000" bore used that casting code at some point. Not sure what the second number is. It doesn't look like a VIN number or block suffix code. To know for sure what you have, look on the front passenger side of the engine. There'll be a small machined pad which will give you the block suffix code. Those numbers will tell you the year, size, horsepower rating, carb used, transmission used with it, and the type of vehicle it was mounted in.
Casting numbers on top of the bellhousing flange and the suffix number on the block deck in front of the passenger side head. The casting numbers will tell you which block casting you have. The suffix will tell you what HP rating it had, what it was likely installed in, and what transmission was mated to it.
You can tell an Oldsmobile V8 when you see one. You can also look at the casting numbers and engine suffix code, both of which will tell you that it's a 350 Olds rather than say, a 307 or 403 Olds.

I don't believe 378999 is a valid casting number for a block or head, however, check the website,www.mortec.com, for SBC casting number information. For Chevy cylinder head specs, try this one: http://www.73-87.com/chevy_ids/sbheads.htm And, another good site for block suffix codes, block casting numbers, and cylinder head specs: http://www.chevy-camaro.com/chevy-camaro-engine-codes.asp Thanks, dave
That is a serial number, not a casting number. There is a great resource for looking up this kind of information at nastyz28.com, but that suffix isn't listed. I have an early (88ish) 345 hp crate motor that ends in zzz, so I'm assuming your engine is a 345 hp crate motor built in Flint, Michigan on August 1 in the mid-nineties.
Don't know what the letters stand for, but I found that suffix here: http://www.nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-codes/chevy-engine-codes-suffix-6.php It shows on the chart what that engine was originally used for.
its Chevy 454 Big Block Engine
You will need to provide the suffix code from front on the passenger side head of the engine.
small block 283 64/67
They are the engine serial number and the suffix code. The suffix codes can easily be decoded. For example, a CRV suffix code is a 454, 450 HP, 4-speed transmission. If the serial numbers that precede "CRV" match the VIN of the car, then you have a numbers matching LS6 4-speed car.
