AS41 means the crankcase is made out of magnesium. They all are. You need to get the engine serial number from under the generator or alternator (on the base of the stand) to determine the year and original size.
the AS engine could be from a number of years I'm afraid- it's a 1600 from August 1973 to the end of production- 1979 i think.AnswerAS41 isn't an engine number. It's the magnesium alloy your engine case was cast from. Volkswagen changed to the improved AS21 alloy in 1975--it was introduced when VW put fuel injection on the Bug engine. So...if you've got an AS41 case, it could have come out of just about any year car.
AS41 is the metal the crankcase is made from. It was used in engines up to 1975--when they changed to fuel injection.

That is a model year 1971 through 1973 1600 cc engine.
This would be a model year 1967 Type 2, or bus engine.
It's not known what year the Volkswagen engine D 1408412 is. The letter D does mean that the engine is a 4 cylinder engine. Earlier engines used one or two letters with numbers.
