The Holden VN Commodore was released on 17 August 1988. This, and subsequent versions based their bodywork on the Opel Senator and Omega. The VN was also similarly based on the Opel Omega.

The engine number for the VN Commodore V6 (Buick V6) is located on the front of the engine block just below the lower radiator hose or beside the air con compressor on a flat part of the block, The engine number is stamped on about a 80 degree angle, Almost verticle reading bottom to top
