The first automobile to bear the Cadillac name it underwent its first outdoor test in late summer of 1902. Factory historical records reveal that the first Cadillac was completed in October 17, 1902. The first three prototype cars were built in the Leland and aulcorner Manufacturing Co. plant on Trombley Avenue in Detroit USA rather than in the former Henry Ford Co. factory at Cass and Amsterdam Streets. Production did not begin until March of the following year. The first three verhicles were constructed for extensive testing and for public exhibition at the forthcoming 1903 National Automobile Show in New York. The first three Cadillacs produced in 1902 were designated Model "A"s and were powered by a horizontally-mounted, single-cylinder engine with five-inch bore and stroke.The car had a planetary transmission with two forewards speeds and reverse, and was chain-driven. It was a buggylike two seater wich was built on a 76 inch wheelbase and weighed 1,395 pounds in standard trim. It stood 57,5 inches high, was 111 inches long and 67 inches wide. The top speed of this car was about 30 miles an hour. The first complete car has been fitted with patend leather fenders. The price was about US $750.
