"Three badges were awarded in the waning days of the Revolutionary War, all to volunteers from Connecticut. On May 3, 1783, Sergeants Elijah Churchill and William Brown received badges and certificates from Washington's hand at the Newburgh headquarters. Sergeant Daniel Bissell, Jr., received the award on June 10, 1783." -- This information is available at the United States Army Center of Military History website.

The original name for the Purple Heart was The Badge of Military Merit. The badge was awarded for "any singularly meritorious action" to enlisted soldiers in the Continental Army. At this time it was nearly unheard of for soldiers of lower ranks to receive awards or decorations.

Who was the first Purple Heart recipient in the US Navy?

AnswerIt was originally called the Badge of Military Merit. "The first Badges of Military Merit were awarded on May 3, 1783 at Gen. Washington's Continental Army "Headquarters, Newburgh" on the west bank of the Hudson River in the state of New York. The first went to Sergeant Elijah Churchill, a 26-year old member of the Fourth Troop of the Second Continental Dragoons from Connecticut. In November, 1780 Sergeant Churchill commanded an attacking force which successfully destroyed a British supply fort on long Island and took 300 prisoners. A year later, in October, Churchill was the only man wounded in a successful raid against the British stronghold at Fort Slongo on Long Island."http://lala.essortment.com/purpleheartrec_reqr.htmThere is no record as to who was awarded first modern (1932 and after) Purple Heart medal, so no one can prove who was the first "modern" recipient. Army Chief of Staff (in 1932) Douglass MacArthur ordered that his own Purple Heart be assigned number one, but that happened after the Purlple Hearts medals had been distributed for months and across the nation, with and without ceremony.

Did Colin Powell earn a Bronze Star for valor in the Vietnam war?

Yes, also the Purple Heart, the Soldier's Medal, the Legion of Merit and others.Powell was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Army, and was one of the 16,000 military advisors dispatched to South Vietnam by President Kennedy in 1962. In 1963, Lieutenant Powell was wounded by a punji-stick booby trap while patrolling the Vietnamese border with Laos. He was awarded the Purple Heart, and later that year, the Bronze Star. Powell served a second tour of duty in Vietnam in 1968-69. During this second tour he was injured in a helicopter crash. Despite his own injuries, he managed to rescue his comrades from the burning helicopter and was awarded the Soldier's Medal. In all, he has received 11 military decorations, including the Legion of Merit. He was awarded the Bronze Star, but he does not wear the V for Valor on it. Without the V device is indicates that it was awarded for meritirious achievement or service.
