The original stone structure that was opened in 1776, was destroyed by an earthquake in December, 1812. In 1915, flooding destroyed a portion of the new building but was rebuilt in 1917.
San Juan Capistrano is famous for the swallows that return every year on March 19th, St. Joseph's Day. Amazingly, after spending the summer there, they all leave together each year on October 23rd, the Day of San Juan.
It didn't close and many people take a tour of the mission every year.

Today it is state park property and it is still used for masses, funerals, marriages, and other religious services. Tours can be taken by visitors and a museum is located on the site. People can visit the gardens and walk around the mission grounds. Celebrations are still held on special days each year and holidays have services. It is an active church and historical property.
