Actually, there are many Maya* People alive today, with numerous thriving populations in Belize, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. Wikipedia estimates there to be about 6 million Maya.

The classic Maya civilization, however, began to collapse around 900 AD until it finally succumb to the pressures of the Spanish conquistadors and other genocidal profiteers following the arrival of Columbus.

The customs and traditions of the Maya continue to thrive as well; but it is now often intertwined with Christian beliefs.

*It's not very well known but the term "Mayan" is a misnomer. The singular and plural form of the word is the same... "Maya"!
