How do you recognize a car have timing belt or chain?

There is no visual way to tell the difference. You will have to refer to the information supplied by the manufacturer as to which years and which engines had belts and which had chains.

When should you change a timing belt on a Ford Taurus?

How often do you replace a timing chain on a Honda CR-V?

Up through the 2001 models CR-V's are quipped with timing BELTS that the factory recommends be replaced every 10 years or at 105,000 miles, whichever comes first. Starting with (and including) the 2002 models, the engines have timing CHAINS which do not require replacement.

When would it be time to change the timing belt on a 2001 GMC Yukon XL?

TRUCK HAS A CHAIN THAT SHOULD LAST THE LIFE OF THE TRUCK. I don't believe that these engines are equipped with a "timing belt" like some Japanese & European cars, but a conventional timing chain as used by American manufacturers for many years. Timing chains do not need to be periodically replaced as with timing belts, except at engine overhaul which should at 150,000-200,000 miles or greater on today's engines if serviced & maintained properly. GM V-8s have timing chains as far as I know; expect to change around 50 to 70k miles is traditonal wisdom.

Nothing. The flow of time will never reach infinity. Therefore, even if humans and the universe can exist for infinity years, nobody will still know what happens then because this time will never be seen

How long is a timing chain supposed to last on average?

I'm no expert but they should last years. My experience is that I have had 2 timing chains break on all the cars I've owned. One was either broken or disrupted when a motorcycle slide under my F150 and hit my rear tire---believe it or not.

How do you change a timing chain on a 1998 Nissan Altima?

Get a book and be prepared to spend a lot of time. This car has two timing chains...a lower and an upper. It is a very big job and I have been working on cars for many years now and would really recommend that anyone that needs to have the chains changed.....take it to a dealer or just get rid of this VERY complicated car. Sorry no more help. YOu can do it but it is a bee atch. Mr. Tripp Augusta, GA

How difficult is changing the timing belt?

This is one job that requires skill and the proper tools. Serious damage can be done to the engine if done incorrectly. Leave this to an expert. If you have lots of time, a service manual and a comfortable place to work you can do it. But to change on on a working vehicle it will take you all day, and you want to MAK SURE you do it right or you'll ruin the valvetrain and likely have to trash the car. What model year maxima do you have? 1995 to present model years all have Timing Chains (not belts!). These chains are designed to last the life of the car. Over the years, this chain may stretch slightly, in which case you can have it tightened. It should cost very little to have your local mechanic adjust the tension on your timing belt.
