True. The 2.8 has a gear driven camshaft while the 2.9 has a timing chain and gears. The head design on the 2.8 created hot spots by having the exhaust valves adjacent on both banks. The head redesign on the 2.9 solved that by moving the valves away from one another, changing the cam design. The 2.9 was designed to have fuel injection and has no provision for a mechanical fuel pump. The 1986 and 1987 model fuel injection systems have a larger throttle body than was necessary and later 2.9's were made smaller. Performance was improved by the cylinder head design and by using fuel injection which is more efficient than a carburetor.
