Both mobs exist, I can assure you that.
Look up "the Westies" and "hells kitchen"
Both mobs generally only exist in New York but I know for a fact both have factions and families in other states as well.
Just be careful asking questions like this, its not a wise choice.
Growing up Irish in NYC I can assure you that both do still exist. But asking questions here poses no threat. In person in NYC is another thing all together, and I do, like the person above advise against it. In Boston, or Chicago as well. It's not like the movies. It's not glamorous, and if you don't already know about it. You don't need to know.
I'm half Italian and half Irish but i have connections to both and both are very dangerous but i will have to say Irish is the worst to run into because there the oldest and i know family members in it. be careful and there every where not just NYC actually mostly Chinatown, and the Southern States

I am from Boston and have a former cousin (by marriage) who ran the Local 25 Teamsters in the 1980's, as well as a cousin who was a member of the Winter Hill Gang, also in the 1980's. There was also a large Italian Mafia presence in Boston growing up as well. The difference is- the Italians had swagger. Expensive suits, Cadillacs, etc.. Swagger is not a must, it's a liability. The Irish weren't that way. You could be sitting next to an Irish gangster in a pub, and you'd never know it. No expensive cars, or jewels, suits, etc. In my years here in Boston, I have always known the Boston Irish mob to be far more ruthless. They deal directly with you, and have no hesitation of getting your family involved if need me as well. I've known many Italians who have mouthed off, or ratted out an Irish gangster, and have never been seen again. The Italians seemed to be more concerned with possessing money, than making it. This with the case of Gennaro Angiulo, who was pretty much hated by everyone- even the Italians themselves. Granted, the Irish were no saints. You had Whitey Bulger who was an informant, Kevin Weeks- who sold everyone out. Then you had John "Red" Shea, who just shut his mouth and did his time. He was the last true Irish-American gangster. The Irish care about making money, staying loyal, and doing whatever is necessary to get what they want.
