I had the same thing happen to me and my 96' suburban. It turned out to be that the battery was shot and wouldn't hold enough of a charge to turn over the engine. Might be the same thing with you.

It happened to my 2002 nissan sentra but once it starts it runs fine and restarts fine. I filled up my gas tank with 91 octane and poured one lucas injector cleaner (ran my car in freeway) and changed my engine coolant temperature sensor. These two things worked for me. There is a whole book on the problems that could be wrong. When my light comes on, I take it to Auto Zone and they pull the Trouble Codes for me. It gives me a good idea of whats wrong. However Auto Zone can only pull the codes from a car that is OBD II, so almost any car 1996 or newer.
