It could be a vriety of things related or unrelated to having your EGR valve replaced. For example you may only need a radiator flush or your catlytic converter may be blocked up or you might even be low on oil. It is always best to to take it to a professional mechanic to find out what's causing your problem and get an estimate of how much it would cost to have it fixed.

If a diagnostic test was done and determined that you need an engine why do they have to do an engine break down to determine whats wrong with it?
Because, while the engine as a whole may be bad, there will be some part of the engine that could be repaired or replaced to make the engine work again.

The O2 sensor is BAD and needs to be replaced. Whats happening is when the engine is cold the sensor sends an air to fuel mixture signal to the computer that satisfys the engine's requirements at start, but when the engine heats up the sensor then send a leanner mixture (To much Fuel) that the engine can't burn off so the Sparkplugs get wet and misfire stalling the engine.
