While attending a play at Ford's Theater on the evening of April 14, 1865, Lincoln was shot in the head at point blank range by John Wilkes Booth, an actor and Southern sympathizer. Booth used a single-shot Deringer pistol. Lincoln was taken to the nearby Petersen House and died the next morning, on April 15(9 hours after being shot).

Abraham Lincoln was shot in the back of his head while sitting in the President's box watching the play "Our American Cousin" at the Fords Theater in Washington, D.C. on the evening of Good Friday, April 14, 1865 (150 years before April 2015). He died early the following morning, only six weeks after starting his second term as U.S. President. His assassin, John Wilkes Booth, a famous actor, immediately after the shooting shouted "Sic semper tyrannis!", which is Latin for "Thus always to tyrants!", as he leapt from the President's box to the stage below.

There is a YouTube video of a man who was in the Fords Theater when Lincoln was shot. He was five years old when he witnessed the shooting, and more than 90 years later he was talking about it on a TV game show, "I've Got a Secret". The fact that the man was a living human "bridge" between the Civil War era and the television era totally blew my mind when I first saw the episode on GSN's "Black and White Sunday Night."

Little-known trivial fact: John Wilkes Booth's brother voted for Lincoln in the Election of 1864.
