When Herbert Hoover moved into the White House in 1929, the US economy was marked by a period of economic prosperity known as the "Roaring Twenties." The Stock Market was experiencing a period of rapid growth, and consumer spending and industrial production were high. However, this period of prosperity was followed by the Great Depression, which began shortly after Hoover took office.

Herbert Hoover is buried in the small Iowa town where he was born. The community of West Branch in eastern Iowa is located 120 east of Des Moines and 13 miles east of Iowa City. The town of 3,000 is also home to the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library, birthplace, and replicated buildings from the time of Hoover's birth. Hoover was born into a "Quaker" family and there are many of that faith in the town even today. A part of the Hoover site includes 110 year old Quaker meeting house.
Herbert Hoover was first to have a phone on his desk. The White House had a phone since about 1879 but it was out in the hall.
