Upon initially preaching the message of Islam, Muhammad was met with mockery and taunts. However, as he progressed and became more influential and more of a person who posed a threat to the present paganism, the Makkans took serious action against Muhammad; he was branded a 'magician' and a 'liar', he was ridiculed by many, for example Abu Jahl once rubbed the entrails of a camel against Muhammad when he was praying. The wife of Abu Lahab would lay down thorns on the paths Muhammad was expected to take, however, some people also listened to his message and consequently accepted Islam, establishing him as a leader.
