The story is that Seth, Osiris's brother played a game at a party for Osiris. The game was that whatever god or goddess could fit inside the jewel encrusted sarcophagus perfectly could keep it. Osiris fit, and the top slammed shut. It's pieces were shattered and Isis, his husband, and Horus, their son worked to find the pieces and put them together. They found them and Seth took them into the Underworld. Osiris was never again strong enough to return to the world above ground, so he became the god of the Underworld and the deceased. If they make it, they get to the Hall of Two Truths where their heart is weighed on a scale against the Feather of Truth. If they pass, they get to spend the rest of forever in the underworld, and sometimes they become guardians of places in the underworld. That is technically an 'afterlife'.

Thoth weighed the heart of the deceased against an ostrich feather, which was the symbol of Mayet, the god of truth and justice.
