Reagan was wounded in the upper chest by a bullet that had been deflected from the frame of the presidential limousine. John Hinckley, Jr. was not a very good shot, and the six rounds he managed to get off in the assassination attempt hit four different people. Reagan was actually hit "accidentally."
His name was John W. Hinckley.
