US President Lincoln replaced Admiral Samuel Du Pont with Rear Admiral John Adolphus Bernard Dahlgren in July of 1863. Du Pont had actually requested to be relieved of duty. Dahlgren's goal was to finally capture Charleston, South Carolina.Dahlgren was a favorite of Lincoln's. Dahlgren was a gunnery expert but was also a political friend of the president. Lincoln made the change without consulting the naval secretary Welles.
