The darlington configuration is two transistors connected in such a way that the gain (hFe) of the pair is higher than either transistor taken individually. The two collectors are connected together, and used as the collector of the pair. The base of the first transistor is the base of the pair. A transistor works as am amplifier by virtue of the fact that you can control the current in one path with a smaller current in another path. Increasing or decreasing the base-emitter current will cause a corresponding increase or decrease in the collector-emitter current, by a ratio that is defined as hFe, or beta-gain. Within the limits, a properly biased transistor exhibits a (generally) linear operation.

transitors amplify signals in a very non-linear fashion. somehow (i don't know how), adding in the negative output of the transistor (negative feedback loop) makes the output much more linearmostly for stabilization, but there can be other reasons in specific cases.
