What is a Darlington transistor composed of?
The darlington configuration is two transistors connected in such a way that the gain (hFe) of the pair is higher than either transistor taken individually. The two collectors are connected together, and used as the collector of the pair. The base of the first transistor is the base of the pair. The emitter of the first transistor is connected to the base of the second transistor. The emitter of the second transistor is the emitter of the pair. Sometimes there is a resistor between the second base and the second emitter, so as to stabilize the pair in certain conditions. Typically, you multiply hFe's in darlington configuration, so if each transistor had an hFe of, say, 100, then the hFe of the pair would be 10,000.
How transister work as amplifier?
A transistor works as am amplifier by virtue of the fact that you can control the current in one path with a smaller current in another path. In a typical class A (common emitter) configuration, a certain current from base to emitter will create a corresponding current from collector to emitter. Increasing or decreasing the base-emitter current will cause a corresponding increase or decrease in the collector-emitter current, by a ratio that is defined as hFe, or beta-gain. Of course, this means that you have to properly bias the transistor, and understand the nature of hFe. You can operate a transistor in cutoff mode or saturated mode if you exceed the hFe limits. Within the limits, a properly biased transistor exhibits a (generally) linear operation.

transitors amplify signals in a very non-linear fashion. somehow (i don't know how), adding in the negative output of the transistor (negative feedback loop) makes the output much more linearmostly for stabilization, but there can be other reasons in specific cases.
