Many times a battery that was allowed to "go dead" by sitting will end up being non-usable.
If you have access to a simple charger, connect it to the battery to see if it will take a charge. If not, don't fight it, just remove the battery, take it to an auto parts retailer and see if they can charge it. If not, just replace the battery.
Charge it with a slow charger of around 10 amps. Make sure to use an automatic charger as not to over charge. Clean the post connections, and if if is not a maintenance free battery make sure the cells are not dry. Only add distilled water.
When using battery cables to start a car, once it has started is there a procedure when removing the cables from the running car?
Yes, the car can be started with the battery charger attached to the battery as a boost.I been doing that for years.
Try having battery charged It may have been discharged to the point that it will not accept a charge and willhave to be replaced After having battery charged check the alternator with a voltmeter - should read approx. 12.8 without engine running and 13.8-14.2 with engine running
The same way you started it before replacing the battery.
Its not charging.
You ruined the alternator by disconnecting the battery while the car was running. I have seen alternators survive this but it is very bad! By the way this test procedure started damaging alternators in the 1960s when generators were phased out of production. This was a valid test procedure to see if the Generator was working before that time.
Car troubleIt could be one of many things. First off it could be a bad alternator/generator. Second it could be your wires arnt properly connected to the battery. Another problem could be the ignitor is going bad. That would be my 3 main ideas why it does that. The charging system has probably failed. You were running only on battery power until the battery was discharged and didn't have enough power to turn the engine over. A quick jumpstart gave the battery a quick short charge and let you drive away but the battery quickly discharged again and the vehicle died. If you could get the vehicle to your local auto parts store they can test the charging system at no cost and tell you what you need to do next.
only if the car your using to charge the other on is not started
because the battery needs charged or need a whole new battery
clean the battery terminals that should fix it
Battery is getting old and will not hold a charge or there is a drain on it. Battery is getting old and will not hold a charge or there is a drain on it.
charge the battery should be ok
