When your cat has kittens it is probably best to not touch them until they can see and hear. This should be after about ten days. You should probably feed the mother where she can't see the kittens to distract her and then you can touch them. This is because some cats are very protective of their kittens and may move them if they see you handling them. After about 4 weeks they will be able to walk and you will probably see them walking around the place following their mother. You will be able to take them away from their mother after about 6-8 weeks if you want to. This is probably the best idea as sometimes the mothers can get jealous and run away if her kittens are getting more attention than her!

When it's born you shouldn't touch it otherwise your human scent will go on it and the mother will reject it. If you really need to touch it when its born (IF ITS REALLY IMPORTANT) WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP AND KEEP WASHING FOR 5MINS. then put gloves on. Otherwise I would advise you to wait 2-3weeks and then touch it.

If you're really ready to take that risk, you'd first need to wait for the mother to leave the kits alone, maybe leave the den area. Then you'd need to keep her away for a while or catch her; if she catches you, you will probably end up with bites, scratches and maybe a few diseases in the process. When you have gotten rid of her, you need to put on protective gloves. Feral kittens often carry diseases, and their claws are very sharp. If the kittens are newborns, you can pick them up gently, but if they are nearing a year old, you may want to corner them with thick, protective cothing and/or tanquilize them.

Do female cats attack people when they touch their kittens?

Most mammals, cats included, tend to be fairly protective of their offspring. If the mother cat knows you well and trusts you, she may allow you to touch the kittens, but you shouldn't just assume that this will be the case. Normally she will make it very clear that you're not welcome before you get close enough to touch the kittens... just move slowly, and pay attention to the mother cat's body language and vocalizations. It's recommended that you do not handle the kittens at all until they are at least two weeks old as long as the mother cat is taking care of them. Until they're four weeks old or so, you should only handle them for short periods, and only when the mother cat is watching.

Will the mom cat come back is you touch her kittens?

It greatly depends on the mother cat. Many breeding Queens seem to prefer their human companions nearby, and do not mind if her kittens are touched. However, if a stranger approches or touches the kittens, this will stress the mother out and will likely move the kittens to a different and more safe location. Mother cats are very affectionate over there young and will very rarely abandon them.
