It goes into a queue that gets reviewed by a CA. The CA either completes the merge, or doesn't, depending on whether it abides by site policy or not, whether there is a better place to merge both into, etc.
When merging a question with alternates into another question, the alternates of the merged question are merged into the alternates of the primary question.
When a Supervisor merges questions, it generally goes this way: The less-grammatically correct question is merged into the more grammatically correct question. Or, the question that hasn't been on site very long, is merged into the question that has been here much longer. The second question (the one that is being merged) becomes an alternative wording to the first question (primary question - the one that it is merged into). Popularity, answers, alternative wordings, links, related questions, discussion pages, etc are merged together under the primary question. The truth is simply that the supervisor chooses which question to merge. They can then look to pick a different alternate as prime if they desire or even re word the prime question.
No, it does not.
If you see a duplicate question on WikiAnswers, please change the question wording to the other. You will then get a message that says "The question [First question] already exists as a redirect to [Second question]. Recommend that this be merged." Click "recommend that this be merged" and the request will be reviewed.
I think the problem to your question is that you spelled "Metalloid" incorrectly. This, in turn, prevented you from accessing the answer. I've already recommended that this answer be merged with the correct one. On a side note, attempting to give a spam answer to your own question and then flagging it can all be seen in the history. 0.o

Maybe your Question was deleted? Or merged with another Question!
It was decided by a supervisor that it was asking something different than the question it was merged in.
Because you merged it with a question asking for a diagram, not a picture, of Venus. When you say that your question is the same as one that it is NOT the same as, it gets merged with that one, and yours does not get answered.
This question will be merged.
It means that the question you asked was already asked by another user, and was made into an alternate wording of another, similarly worded question. Generally, this happens when a question is merged into another question that means the same thing, so that there aren't two questions asking the same thing.
The question(s) you are watching may have been reworded or have been merged into another question. If the question was merged into a catch-all question designed for inappropriate questions, then your Watchlist may show some of these questions.
