The Roman Catholic Church and with it Catholocism was founded in Rome during the first century.

Another OpinionThe Christian church split 1054 into the Eastern and the Western, which was then to become the Roman Catholic church, until it too split and created the Church of England.

Iza's Research:

Christianity began in the first century. The Catholic Church, however, was not created until much later. The exact date I am still trying to find, but it was undoubtedly created by the Romans after Theodosius passed the law to adopt Christianity as the Roman Empire's only religion around 380 AD. Before that, however, the Roman Empire actually persecuted Christians. The Roman persecution of Christians officially began in 303 AD, known as the Diocletian Persecution or sometimes called The Great Persecution.

It is my OPINION (I have yet to find the truth behind it, but the dates make sense to me), that in the fall of the Roman Empire (around 475-480 AD), the Roman officials probably saw promise in creating a religious empire versus a typical government (which requires organizing money, military, land and laws), and founded the Catholic Church to continue the Roman trends of conquering and preserve fundamental ideals. The lack of factual information about the true beginning of Catholicism may be an attempt by the church to conceal these motives, which may or may not still be a part of the church today. It is obvious, however, that the beginning of the Catholic Church as opposed to the vague Christian Church must have formed at least after 380 AD, which was when Romans accepted the religion in the first place. Because it is common knowledge that Catholicism is of Roman influence (is there another Catholic besides Roman?), it must have happened somewhere between 380 and 480 AD.

Catholic Answer:Catholicism was founded on Pentecost Sunday about the year 33 AD when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles in the upper room in Jerusalem, giving them the courage and inspiration to begin spreading the Gospel. It quickly spread to the entire known world. We know that the term "Catholic Church" was already in use in the year 106 AD as it appears in writings of St. Ignatius of Antioch and may have been used in spoken form even before that. From the very beginning the Church was in the process of evolving as it grew in numbers.

The catholic religion's seed was planted by the Roman emperor, Constatine. It consisted of a union of the then present Roman religion, idolatry, and an errant church, which was once a true church but apostacized..

Is catholicism the first founding denomination?

Roman Catholic AnswerNo, Catholicism is the only Church that was founded by Jesus Christ to preach and to bring His message to people and people to God. "Denominations" as we have today did not start until the sixteenth century when several people left the Church and founded their own. These "churches" are what is know now as denominations. Catholicism is Christianity, NOT a denomination.
