She was coming back from a mission in Europe and her ship was under attack by the union. Her and two other shipmates got on to a life boat but than a storm came and there boat capsized. Rose had 2,000$ of gold with her and she drowned due to the weight of the gold.
In 1864 Rose boarded the Condor, a British blockade-runner which was to take her home. Just before reaching home the ship ran aground at the mouth of the Cape Fear River near Wilmington, North Carolina. In order to avoid the Union gunboat that was pursuing her ship, Rose fled in rowboat, but was never seen again. Her little boat capsized and she was dragged down by the gold she had received in royalties for her book.
