Romans converted to Christianity, by declaration from their Leader of the Eastern region of Rome's realm, Constantinople. Constantinople realized that he was not going to be able to quell the continuing increase in population of the Christian religion. In order to be able to bring "stability" throughout the land, he unwantingly proclaimed Christianity as the new religion of Rome and that no longer would anyone be allowed to pray. etc., to what we refer to now as "Pagan" Gods. He did this so as to stop the ongoing strife between Christians and Romans and to stop, as well, the ongoing slaughtering of Christians, which was causing increasing problems for the realm due to Christians gathering in extremely large numbers and revolting against the treatment being used on them.

We do know from Paul and Nero that there already was already a Christian community in Rome by the 50s CE and probably much earlier, but we do not know who these very first Roman Christians were. They may have been Jewish expatriats or very early Roman converts. With so little known, it can not be said why the earliest Roman converts became Christians.

In the early fourth century, Constantine exhorted all his subjects by circular letters, to imitate without delay the example of their sovereign and to embrace Christianity. He promised every Roman convert a white garment, with twenty pieces of gold. The cities which signalled a forward zeal by the voluntary destruction of their temples were distinguished by municipal privileges and rewarded popular donatives. The rich and powerful, and those with ambition were assured that their opportunities would be increased by their adopting, or appearing to adopt, Christianity. The conversion of those who possessed the eminence of birth, power or riches, was soon followed by imitation among the dependent masses.
