Spain originally claimed the territory of Florida in 1513 when Juan Ponce de Leon discovered it while searching for land north of Cuba.
France never officially had control of Florida, but in 1562, Jean Ribault built a fort, named Fort Caroline, on the banks of St. Johns River. However, the Spanish forced them away from Florida.
In 1763, Spain traded Florida to Great Britain in exchange for control of Havana, Cuba, which they had lost during the Seven Years' War. Spain eventually regained control of Florida after the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783, ending the American Revolutionary War.
When Florida began to be a burden to Spain, they gave it up to the United States in 1821 through the Adams-Onis Treaty. Florida became an official state on March 3, 1845.
Following Abraham Lincoln's election as President in 1860, Florida, like many other Southern states, seceded from the Union, which took place on January 10, 1861. They joined the Confederate States of America and fought against the Union in the Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1865.
