Cats are polyphasic, which means that they have several sleep cycles each day.
How many cats fit into a mini is largely dependent on what size of cats one is attempting to cram into the car. Another important factor is whether the cats are awake or asleep, in crates or free.
Cats are like people. They pick out their favorite and latch on.
Actually they do sleep, mostly throughout the day and are sometimes awake when its around nighttime. That's why cats live long years since they sleep a great portion of their lives. :L

Largely they are just there for the warmth of your body, and because they like you, and want to be near you. If they sit on your lap when you are awake, they are just continuing that activity by laying on you when you sleep.
