They form an ionic bond.
they would bond together forming salt
They combine to make sodium chloride, commonly known as table salt.
An ionic bond
since a positively charged ion will be attracted to a negatively charged ion, when they come together they form a compound with different characteristics than the elements the ions came from. take table salt for example. it's an ionic compound. NaCl = Sodium chloride is its real name and they come together since a sodium atom is positively charged and a chlorine atom is negatively charged. when they come together they form NaCl.
it came from the latin word sodanum, which means headache remedy

If they were in an aqueous solution (in water) they would remain dissociated (unbonded). If they were in an ideal non-aqueous environmet then they would bond to form sodium chloride NaCl.

Pure sodium is reactive, in a rather violent way. Any free sodium that could exist naturally would have reacted so as soon as it came into existence. It is unstable, and can only be stable as a compound with other elements like chlorine (sodium chloride).

Sodium chloride salt.
No reaction occurs girlsnotgrey: If you look at the periodic table for the the halogens the F, Cl, Br, I Chloride is higher up on the periodic table then Iodine. Meaning that Chlorine is more reactive then Iodine. so when Iodine is mixed with sodium chloride, Chloride will stay with sodium and there will be no reaction. NaCl(aq)+I(aq)= NaCl(aq) +I(aq) as you can see there is no reaction so you just write no reaction.
Sodium is an element that came from stars that are long since gone. When the earth formed from dust and rubble, sodium was part of the mix. Sodium leaches out of rocks from rainwater and collects in the ocean as a chlorine salt.
