∙ 10y agoNo, this is an internet myth. His classmates called him "Barry Obama" back then. He was officially listed in Occidental materials as "Barack Obama". He never used the name "Soetoro" because his step-father never adopted him.
Snopes.com as a detailed deconstruction of the Hoax, including a quote from Occidental's communications Director which confirms that "Occidental has no record of a "Barry Soetoro" ever attending". He goes on to say "Contemporary public documents, such as the 1979-80 freshman 'Lookbook' published at the beginning of President Obama's first year at Occidental, list him as Barack Obama. All of the Occidental alumni I have spoken to from that era (1979-81) who knew him, knew him as Barry Obama."

∙ 11y agoThere is not much evidence of it. His writings and other sources say his maternal grandparents paid his tuition so that he could begin attending college, and then he worked and took out college loans.
