Yes. The "I" of the ballad is not the singer.
I can think of a few off the bat. "Billy, don't be a hero" was about a Union soldier dying in the Civil War. Two versions of the song were released at the same time, one by the British group Paper Lace, and the other by Bo Danaldson and the Heywoods. Listeners voted for their favorite, and the Bo Donaldson version won by a very narrow margin. Also I think Billy Ray Cyrus had a song called, "All gave some, some gave all." Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler had a hit with "The Ballad of the Green Berets" which ends in death for the Special Forces soldier he is singing about. [I saw Sadler in an interview shortly befor his death, talking about his Casca series of books, and he said that he wished he had never written the song.] Also there is a poignant Country song, sung in first person about a soldier buried in Arlington, but I cannot remember the singer. Somebody, help me with this one.
