What can you use to substitute baking powder in chocolate ship cookies?

You can use cream of tartar and baking soda as a replacement for baking powder. One half teaspoon of cream of tartar and one quarter teaspoon of baking soda will equal one teaspoon of baking powder.

What is baking powder used for?

Baking powder is useful for mixing into many types of batter and dough as leavening. It already contains an acid, so it does not need additional acid in the batter, as baking soda needs. Some baked good that use baking powder as leavening are Quick Breads, Cookies, Biscuits, Cornbread, Muffins, Pancakes and Waffles.

Why is baking powder important to a recipe?

If baking powder is called for in a recipe, it is essential. The base and acid components in the powder, when wet, create the air bubbles that cause the dough to rise, making the end product soft and allowing it to cook thoroughly. Without the baking powder or baking soda (see below), the result of baking unleavened dough will be just hot dough or perhaps dough dried hard. If you have no baking powder but have baking soda, you can substitute a combination of baking soda plus an acidic ingredient, such as molasses, buttermilk or yogurt, or even a little citrus juice.

Can you mix baking powder and baking soda?

There is no need to. Baking powder has baking soda in it already. Baking powder is a mixture of cream of tartar and baking soda. Adding extra soda to it might make the bake good you are preparing come out with "unexpected" results. If a recipe actually calls for it, fine, but I have never seen one that calls for both. If you don't have enough of one or the other for you recipe, you can mix them but if you're low on soda, the baked good may not rise as much. It's best to follow the amounts in the recipe since each one responds a little differently depending on the acid content of the batter.

Is baking powder and baking soda the same?

No. But they both serve as leavening agents. Baking powder has baking soda in it

What is an alternative to bicarbonate soda?

Depends on what reciepe you are using and what the purpose is: I often use yeast but in some recipes depending on the fluffiness of the cake I will sometimes use baking soda. A friend of mine uses "fizzy water" (carbonated water) as an alternative. Yeast is only used in bread related recipes, whereas bicarb can be used n cakes ~ Baking Soda in a recipe is to help with 'spreadability of the cookie or cake. You don't use it in pancakes so you want the batter to 'stay put'. In a cookie, you want it to spread out a bit, in the cake, you want it to fill in the space of the pan. Baking Soda and Baking Powder CAN be used for each other in a subbing situation. They are both considered leavening agents. In choosing to substitute one for the other you have to know the ratio AND the fact the flavor WILL be DIFFERENT. 1 TSP of Baking Soda needs 3 TSP of Baking Powder. OMIT all SALT. Reverse it to use soda instead of baking powder. You can also use 2 tsp soda and 1 tsp cream of tarter to create BAKING POWDER. Again, omit the salt from the recipe. AGAIN, any substitutions of ingredients, expect flavor change to happen.

Self-rising cake flour is it the same as cake flour or self-rising flour and can you use all purpose flour instead?

Cake flour is a finer grained powder than all purpose. Self rising means it already has the baking powder added. All purpose may be used for either, but you would have to add baking powder, and the end product would not be quite as delicate.

What happens if you use baking powder instead of baking soda?

baking powder is baking soda and an acid. Today most baking powder is double acting, which means it rises once when it gets wet and again when it gets hot. The answer to the question depends on what your substituting in. Sometimes baking soda is used to adjust the pH (acid or base level) of a dish. Baking powder won't really help there. If you use the same amount of baking powder instead of baking soda in a cake it will not rise properly. I made two batches of banana bread. One using baking soda, as called for in the recipe. The other only using baking powder (without adding any cream of Tartar). They both had the same rise to them. I was very surprised. However, I think it does depend on what type of result you are trying to achieve. If you have time to experiment, then you should. There's no better teacher than experience. That's what I did.

How baking soda do you use for baking powder?

Replacing Baking Soda with Baking PowderBaking powder is powdered acid plus a powdered base. When liquid is added they mix together and form carbon dioxide. Baking soda is just a powdered base and needs acid in a recipe in order to create the bubbles needed to rise dough or batter. I've found that if you add about 4 times more baking powder you should create something that works about right. You may want to decrease your acid a little though. Then again...Baking soda reacts with acids to make baked goods rise while baking powder reacts with water. Because of that, most of the time they can't replace each other. After testing the above suggestion I have found that 4 times the amount is far too much baking powder. I would suggest trying only double the amount. This was tried in a biscuit recipe, and baking powder is fine as an alternative.

What does baking powder do to cake?

It either helps whatever you're baking rise or make whatever you're baking soft and fluffy.

What would happen if you didn't add baking powder to a cupcake?

If you used self-raising flour but no baking powder, the cake will still be edible but more dense than it was designed to be. If you used all-purpose flour and no raising agents, it will not be a cake you end up with - the texture will be more biscuity.
