As a native Vancouverite, the actual founding of Vancouver was sometime in the late 1800's. In the middle 1800's, there were two small settlements along Burrard Inlet, the body of water that borders Vancouver's north extremity: one was Granville, the other Hastings. They were both driven by the logging industry and ran their respective sawmills. By the mid 1880's the two communities became incorporated into the City of Vancouver. A horrific fire in 1886 destroyed virtually everything along the waterfront but with the arrival of Canada's first trans-continental railway in 1887(the CPR), lots were being sold to British immigrants. By 1910, there were nearly 100,000 people in the city. By 2000 Vancouver boasted a population of more than 750,000. Today, Greater Vancouver encompasses the cities of Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Port Moody, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, New Westminster, Surrey and Langley with a combined population of about 2 million.

George Vancouver, born 1757, entered the navy at the age of 13. He sailed with Captain James Cook for a couple of years, then apparantly went on his own. He first came to Canada in 1792, to circumnavigate Vancouver Island.

Yes. George Vancouver entered Burrard Inlet on June 13th, 1792. Vancouver's downtown is currently located on the south shore of Burrard Inlet. Vancouver Island, Mount Vancouver (Alaska), and Vancouver Washington, are also named after George Vancouver.

He reached the site of Vancouver in 1792. He was not the first European to explore the area, however. José María Narváez was the first to explore it, and he did so in 1791, a year before Captain Vancouver arrived.
