Catherine of Aragon came to England to become the wife of Arthur, the son of Henry VII. They were married only a short time before he died however. For the next 8 years Catherine lived in England, but she was in limbo with not much money. When Henry VII died in 1509 Henry VII died and Arthur's brother Henry VIII became King. Only one duaghter servived. There is no concrete answer as to why Catherine of Aragon (and later Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour) had problems with their pregnancies. People have come up with several reasons why this might have been though. 1. Poor diet (royalty during this time did not eat as much fruit or vegetables as they needed. Catherine of Aragon also may have done damage during her fasting) 2. Henry VIII had STD that afftected the womens abilty to bear healthy children 3. Alcholic Consumtion-the drink of choice was mostly wine during that time 4. Relationship to Henry VIII (Catherine was Henrys 4th and 5th cousin and Anne and Jane were related to Henry as well which might have impacted the health of any offspring between them.)

Henry VIII first wife was Catherine of Aragon. She married him 7 years after being married to his older brother Arthur, who died after 6 months of marriage to Catherine. Henry's family was much opposed to the marriage; in particular, the King's Grandmother, who ruled the court. They felt that one man should not marry his brothers wife, but Catherine and Henry received a dispensation from the Pope that allowed them to marry, on the grounds that Catherine had not been Arthur's true wife as their marriage had not been consummated. Catherine was a great queen; the people loved her; she fought the Scots of her own accord and won, killing their monarch at Flodden; she bore him 8 children, unfortunately only one survived beyond their first 6 months (Mary). Catherine's parents were Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon. Catherine of Aragon was renowned in history for being a truly loving wife; even though Henry had many affairs and mistresses, she never complained. She was also a devout Catholic and always refused a divorce, believing that her and Henry's marriage was right and made by God. Henry behaved abominably towards her, but she carried on loving him and remained stout in the belief that she was his wife and would forever be. Catherine of Aragon died, alone but for her ladies, in a small, dirty house after over half a century of royal life- first as a Princess Of Spain, then as Queen of England. Her health had been deteriorating rapidly, but it worsened quickly, according to her ladies, after she had drank some Welsh-brewed beer. Catherine of Aragon was important in European history for a number of reasons. For one, she was the youngest daughter of Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella (who we also know of who financed Christopher Columbus's voyages to the New World) Catherine would later grow up to be the 1st wife of the infamous King Henry VIII, and her refusal to go for a divorce and retire into a nunnery when Henry fell head over heels for Anne Boleyn led to Henry breaking away from the Catholic Church. And last but not least, Catherine of Aragon was the mother of Mary Tudor, Henry VIII's eldest daughter who would later inherit the throne and earn the nickname 'Bloody Mary'.
