Famous cavalry commander Confederate General James Ewell Stuart graduated from West Point in 1854. He ranked 13th among his graduating class of 46 cadets. Stuart was a key figure in the battles in Virginia. He also had served under Robert E. Lee when Lee captured John Brown in 1859. Stuart saw extensive service in the Army of Northern Virginia. Stuart was killed in 1864 at the Battle of Yellow Tavern.
Confederate General George Bibb Crittenden graduated from West Point in 1832. Among his class of graduating cadets, he ranked 26th out of 45 graduates. General Crittenden was involved in a situation where he failed to file a timely report at his loss at the Battle of Gaines Mill. He was charged as being intoxicated at the time. He had to resign his commission in 1863.
Confederate Major General William Dorsey Pender graduated from West Point in 1854. Among his graduating class of 46 cadets, Pender ranked 22nd. Pender saw major battle action in the Eastern Theater. He participated in the Peninsula campaign, Battle of Cedar Mountain, Battle of Harper's Ferry,Battle of Antietam, Second Bull Run and at Chancellorsville. He had been wounded several times before his was given command of a division at Gettysburg. On the second day of the battle he sustained a serious wound. He was transported back to Virginia and died on July 18, 1863.
Confederate General Robert Hall Chilton graduated from West Point in 1837. Among the 50 graduating cadets that year, Chilton ranked 48th. Chilton spent most of the war serving as chief of staff for General Robert E. Lee.
Confederate General Wesley Merritt graduated from West Point in 1860. He was ranked 22nd in his class that numbered 41. Merritt served at the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. In 1864 he died of wounds suffered at the Battle of Cedar Creek in 1864.
Confederate General Lucious Marshall Walker graduated from West Point in 1850. He was ranked 15th out of a graduating class of 44 cadets. Walker saw most of his battle action in the Western Theater. For example he was in the Battle of Corinth. In 1863, within his own division, Walker and fellow General John Marmaduke engaged in a "gentle men's duel over a matter of honor. Waler died from his gunshot wounds from Marmaduke.
In 1850, Confederate General Armistead Lindsay Long graduated from West Point. He was ranked seventeenth in his class of 44 graduating cadets. Long served in the Eastern Theater of the US Civil War. He saw action at the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
