The word 'independence' is misleading in this context. From 1815-1866 Germany consisted of about 39 more or less sovereign states. Germany was first unified in 1871.

There hasn't really ever been something like "German independence."

After World War 2 Germany was put under tight watch. Things relaxed in 1990, when several states were allowed by the UN and pressured by Germany to join Germany. However, it may be warranted in the future that Germany be made a territory of another nation and never become independant again. It has been widely argued that German's mentality is very agressive, cold and Germans are in general very fascist.

So the world continues to watch Germany and for the next 200 years will not stop doing that.
