The Republic of Hawaii was the formal name of Hawaii from 1894 to 1898 when it was run as a republic. The republic period occurred between the administration of the Provisional Government of Hawaii which ended on July 4, 1894 and the adoption of the Newlands Resolution in Congress in which the Republic was annexed to the United States and became the Territory of Hawaii on July 7, 1898. The state was admitted to the Union on August 21, 1959, making it the 50th state.

There wasn't an invasion in the strict sense of the word. During the 19th century the islands were an independent kingdom but there was considerable unrest that led to the 1874 landing of British and American troops as peacekeepers. The islands remained independent until 1898 when the U.S., in the midst of an expansionist movement that also led to other annexations, declared the islands to be a U.S. possession.
