Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. The Soviet Union invaded Poland on September 17th. Slovakia also aided the Germans & participated in the invasion. By October 6, 1939 Poland's defenses had been defeated. Poland did not surrender. A Polish Government-in-Exile operated eventually from Britain. Polish naval, air & ground units fought alongside the Allies for the remainder of the Second World War. By the end of the war, 20% of Poland's civilian population had been killed by Nazi Germany. The Soviet Union murdered thousands of captured Polish Army officers when it invaded in 1939. Then later in 1944-45 when Soviet forces pushed the Germans out of Poland, the Soviet Union resumed its efforts to wipe-out the Polish resistance movement and political leaders. The Soviet Union forced a totalitarian Communist government upon Poland. Poland did not become free again until the collapse of the Communist satellite governments of eastern Europe at the end of the 1980's.
