The first opium wars between China and Great Britain in 1839 resulted in the island of Hong Kong being occupied by British forces in 1841. The island was officially ceded to Britain under the Treaty of Nanking which resulted in the island losing its independence. After the treaty was signed, Hong Kong became established as a crown colony with Victoria City named as its capital after the ruling monarch Queen Victoria.
