To first give a bit of background: In 1801 what was called the United Kingdom was formed. It consisted of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Ireland wanted independence and in 1921 a treaty was signed, where 26 of Ireland's 32 counties became independent and are now known as the Republic of Ireland. The other 6 counties formed Northern Ireland, which is still part of the United Kingdom. So some would say not all of Ireland is free. It is also true to say that as England is only one part of the United Kingdom, so it doesn't own the other 3 parts.
Ireland got its freedom on December 6th, 1921.
Through a war of independence, which led to a treaty that was signed in December 1921, giving Ireland independence in 1922.

The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland are on the island of Ireland, so they do not even share a border with England and have never been part of it.
