The Kelley brothers (Irad & Datus) began buying up lots on the island in the 1830's. At that time there was no formal political structure. In 1840 the Islanders petitioned the State of Ohio and became a Township. It held elections and had 3 Trustees, a Clerk and Treasurer.
In 1887 the Township officially became a Village. Its boundaries encompass the entire island. Then as now, the Village elects a Mayor, 6 Council Members, and a Village Clerk/Treasurer.

Kelleys Island in located in Lake Erie half way between Cleveland and Toledo. Lake Erie is one of the five Great Lakes. Lake Erie forms the northern boundary of Ohio, and is refered to as Ohio's North Shore. There are several islands in the western part of the Lake, including the Bass Islands (Put-in-Bay), Kelleys Island, Mouse, Sugar and Rattlesnake islands and a few more. Several large cities are found along the lakeshore including Cleveland, Lorain, Sandusky, and Toledo.
The most well-known glacial feature on Kelleys Island would be the Glacial Grooves, located on the north side of the island. They were protected in the 1880's by deed and are generally recognized as the best examples of glacial action in the U S. There are several 'Kelleys Islands' out there. The one in Ohio is a tourist destination and yes, there are quite a few people who live there. There are over 800 houses on the island, the 2000 Census listed 364 people as permanent residents, and in the winter, we have just 100 people spending the winter, who we call the few, the proud and the brave.

The 2000 Census gave the island's population as 364. That is the number of people who indicated that the island is their permanent place of residence. Since this is a resort area, it should be noted that there are over 800 houses on the island, but most of these are second homes. We do not have the 2010 Census info yet.
