Well it is not quite that simple because:

He ruled in Scotland as James VI from 24 July 1567, when he was only one year old, succeeding his mother Mary, Queen of Scots.

He became James I, King of England, when Queen Elizabeth I died on On 24 March 1603.

This event unified the two thrones from that time onward and was the start of a British monarchy.
