There's no exact date. London had been the capital already in the reign of Edward the Confessor (1042-1066). The first two Norman kings, William I and II, found Winchester more convenient as it's only about 14 miles from Southampton, from where one can sail to Normandy. In the reign of the third Norman king, Henry I (reigned 1100-1135) London became the capital again.

Great Britain does not have a capital.

Great Britain is not a country, a state or a nation, it is an island. It is one of the two large islands which, together with around 1000 small offshore islands, make up The British Isles.

The island of Great Britain plus the North Eastern part of the other large island (Ireland) - and most of the small islands - make up The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The capital of The United Kingdom is London.

When they really mean "The United Kingdom" many people say "Britain" or "Great Britain" but, strictly speaking, they are incorrect because neither "Britain" nor "Great Britain" can properly be used as alternative terms for "The United Kingdom or "The UK".

It's where the Romans first settled. Aside from that, it's culturally significant and has good trade routes :)
