Matthew Flinders is considered to have started his journey of circumnavigating Australia on 6 December 1801.

In reality, Flinders departed from Sydney much earlier. However, because he started charting the coastline from a point out to sea from Cape Leeuwin in December 1801, this is regarded as the date he began his journey.

Matthew Flinders was an Eighteen year old Midshipman when he set sail from England with Captain William Bligh in the "Providence", in 1792. He sailed to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). He then left England (again) for New South Wales in the "Reliance", in 1795, arriving in Australia at Sydney Cove in Port Jackson, the site of the new colony of Sydney. This was essentially the only settlement in Australia when he arrived, which was during the 1790s.

Matthew Flinders did not actually arrive in Esperance, as he did not go to shore there. However, his ship passed by the area where Esperance, WA, now stands, sometime during May 1803.
