Well, since Michael is an angel, he has always followed Jesus (before Jesus came to Earth as a baby). In the Catholic Church (as well as Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran churches) he is considered a saint (though not canonized) simply because he is one of the few angels mentioned by name in scripture.
