Yes, By the MOORS ( Muslims and Arabs from North Africa) They named their new territory "Al-Andalus." It was organized under the civil and religious leadership of the caliph of Damascus. Governors in Islamic Spain were generally Syrians. Muslims ruled in Spain from 711 AD until 1492 AD. Which is why you see many Arabic words in The Spanish language. The cultural and social contributions under Muslim rule still persist in the region today.

Prior to the Muslims, the Romans were in Spain as well.

Spain actually wasn't colonized but rather was the colonizer starting in 1492 when Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue. For the next 350 years Spain (along with Portugal, France, England, Germany and the Dutch a little bit later) continued to colonize other areas like South America, The Caribbean, and the American South-West.

Spain first colonized Hispaniola (later to be the Dominican Republic) in 1494. Spain finally withdrew from the colonies of Rio de Oro (later to be Western Sahara) and Equatorial Guinea in 1975. Spain has had at least one colony in every year between 1494 and 1975.
