Union General Jessee Lee Reno graduated from West point in 1846. He ranked eighth in a graduating class of cadets of 59. This was the same class of George B. McClellan. In fact Reno served with McClellan in the Antietam campaign. General Reno had been with John Pope in the defeat of the Second Bull Run. For a time he specialized in artillery. He also served earlier with Burnside in the coastal campaigns. Unlike most of Pope's commanders, Reno had handled his retreat from the Second Bull Run with good order. Clearly his rank in class of 8th when McClellan graduated second served him well. He was more than competent. It's strange that in 1862 he was still a brigadier general, and not higher in rank.
